The Grizzly Torque

1957

A Land Rover, a Journey, and the Road That Helped Shape a Legacy

In 1957, Robert Bateman and biologist Bristol Foster set out on an extraordinary global expedition in a Land Rover they affectionately named The Grizzly Torque. Part vehicle, part travelling studio, part scientific field station, The Grizzly Torque carried two young naturalists across continents with a 16mm camera, an artist’s brush, and an unshakable appetite for wonder.

More than a mode of transportation, The Grizzly Torque became a symbol of curiosity in motion — the spirited road companion behind a journey that deepened Bateman and Foster’s lifelong devotion to art, science, conservation, and the wild beauty of the planet. Its story lives on through The Art of Adventure, a documentary celebrating friendship, exploration, and the kind of open-hearted seeing that would help shape Robert Bateman’s legacy.
