Some films show us wild places. The Art of Adventure invites us to feel them.
Directed by award-winning filmmaker Alison Reid, this beautiful new documentary follows the extraordinary lifelong friendship between Robert Bateman and biologist Bristol Foster — two curious young men who set out in 1957 on a global expedition in a Land Rover affectionately named The Grizzly Torque; travelling (surviving) 14 months, living in the GT.
Armed with a 16mm camera, an artist’s brush, and an apparently bottomless appetite for wonder, Bateman and Foster travelled through some of the world’s most breathtaking landscapes. What began as an adventure became something much larger: a love letter to nature, friendship, curiosity, and the responsibility we all share to protect the living world.
At its heart, The Art of Adventure is not only about where they went, but what they carried home with them — a deeper reverence for the planet, a lifetime of environmental activism, and the joyful reminder that wonder is not childish. It is essential.
We are thrilled to help celebrate this moving film and the incredible work of Alison Reid, whose storytelling brings humour, heart, and humanity to this remarkable chapter in Robert Bateman’s life.
