Robert Bateman was chosen as one of '100 Champions of Conservation' by the National Audubon Society including artists, photographers, activists, politicians and poets who shaped the environmental movement in the 20th century. The list was created to mark the 100th anniversary of the society and appeared in the November - December 1998 issue of Auubon magazine.

In including Mr. Bateman, the National Audubon Society notes: "with his evocative images of animals in their native habitat, he is one of the world's best-known contemporary wildife artists. His paintings have brought a heightened awareness of nature to countless people and have raised millions of dollars for conservation causes. Rather than rest on his reputation, Bateman constantly uses his popularity to speak out for the environment."
