The bald eagle is already an arresting bird with its size, stern countenance, position in the feeding chain and strong contrasting colouring.
I have extrapolated the theatre of the bald eagle into a basically calligraphic black and white dramatic study. The white negative shapes are not “nothing” – they are as important as the black shapes.
I have a “gut” positive reaction to Japanese calligraphy (much more than the tighter Chinese calligraphy). I have the same aesthetic reaction to the abstracts of Franz Kline. This was behind my original concept and decisions in this painting.”
