The spotted owl is one of the rarest birds in North America. They should be on the endangered species list. Since they require large acreage of old growth lowland forest, their existence is inevitably threatened by clear-cut lumbering activities. Once the forest cover is removed, the birds are open to predation, and the survival rate is virtually zero. The spotted owl is also vulnerable due to its very tame and almost confiding nature.
To me, the owls represent almost a mystical spirit of the great western forest as it was when white man first arrived. It would be a pity if the last of the forest and the last of the owls were to vanish in this generation.
