Unlike the swift fox, the burrowing owl never completely disappeared from Canada, but it has recently been placed on the Canadian endangered species list. This has happened despite considerable co-operation from farmers who agreed to leave parts of their land unploughed in an effort to restore the owl's habitat. More encouraging is the fact that the Canadian government has announced a ban on most uses of carbofuran, an extremely toxic pesticide that has been a major contributor to the burrowing owl's decline and to the decline of many other Prairie birds.
