May Maple – Scarlet Tanager
(scroll down for description)
9” x 16”, acrylic, 1984
The scarlet tanager is perhaps the most vivid, almost tropical-looking bird of the temperate zone. He seems out of place in the green deciduous forests of the Northeast, but that is where he belongs. The red is really what I call vermillion, a sort of orange-red rather than scarlet. It seems to be lit from within, even on dull days.
